The history of magic is fascinating. What we enjoy now as fun tricks, had a very primal and darker past.

In the earliest times, magic was a way for people to explain what they did not understand. Magic tricks were used in religious ceremonies and rituals to show greater respect to a god. Magicians would perform at temples and churches as part of their daily occupation.

In many early civilizations, magic was seen as a means by which humans could channel supernatural forces to cause change in the physical world. In other words, should you believe in it, magic could actually work! Magicians made divine claims that they could influence nature on behalf of the common man or woman – either for good or bad depending on how much faith you put into them.

In Ancient Greece and Rome magicians were known as ‘sorcerers” and were seen as people who dealt with the devil and had access to secret knowledge. Magicians would often be male priests or priestesses of pagan cults, though many were also women. Magicians in these early civilizations frequently used human skulls, bloodied swords, animal parts, and fire in their rituals.

Magicians would perform illusions such as cutting someone in half – only it wasn’t real! Magicians performed magic tricks by hiding a person underneath some kind of covering while another person took their place on top of the covering. The magician would then cut into the middle of the covering revealing the wrong person while the hidden person appears somewhere else – like out from under a table or behind an audience member’s back. Magicians are still using this technique to this day!

The history of magic is a long one, from the earliest civilizations all the way up to present day. Magicians have been entertaining audiences with their illusions for centuries. Magicians have always been around and they probably always will be.

In addition to being used as a form of entertainment, magicians were also called upon by religious leaders at times for healing purposes. Today some psychics claim they can heal people by performing magic tricks – although most scientists say these claims are false and there is no scientific evidence that they actually work. Magicians would often attempt to heal common illnesses such as headaches or toothaches by placing a bag containing herbs on top of the person’s head and then remove it, thus magically “healing” the person.

Magicians were also asked to help ease a person’s passing from this life into the next by performing magic tricks involving fire and swords. Magicians would often have a priest come along for this type of ceremony as well to ensure that it was carried out properly and according to religious rules. Magicians would use their magic tricks involving fire to frighten off evil spirits. Magicians would also lead funeral marches through town carrying torches or lanterns with them.

The history of magic shows that magicians were not only used during pagan rituals or ceremonies but they were also frequently hired by kings and queens in order to entertain them at dinner, tea parties, celebrations, etc… Magicians employed all sorts of magic tricks back then including sleight of hand, card tricks, and illusions.

Another famous magician from Ancient Greece was Thessalus of Tralles who is said to have invented the first vanishing cabinet – which is still used by magicians today! Magicians would often use this cabinet to make people or objects appear to vanish into thin air.

In the 1800s, one of the most famous and well known magicians was Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin . One of Houdin’s most famous tricks involved appearing to escape from a set of shackles. Magicians still perform this trick today! Another one of his famous illusions is the “vanishing bird cage.” Magicians would often use a bird or other small animal inside a cage for this magic trick. The magician would cover the top of the cage with some kind of cloth and then make it vanish in thin air – leaving only the empty floor underneath where the cage sat. Magicians still do this illusion today as well, although they now use a box rather than a cage because it is easier to hide the box out of sight. While not all magicians used illusions in their magic routines, Houdin was known for using many illusions in his tricks.

One of the magicians who used illusions in magic tricks the most was the famous Harry Houdini . Magicians such as David Copperfield and David Blaine are also well known for using illusions to perform magic tricks that involve bringing people back from the dead, making them float through air, or appear to be cut into pieces and then miraculously put back together again.
