I was delighted recently to be asked to write an article for Secrets, the magazine of The Magic Circle’s Young Magicians Club.
The invitation came from my good friend Harry De Cruz, who has been a great force behind the club. Harry puts a huge amount of energy into encouraging and supporting young magicians, so it was a real pleasure to contribute something to a project that means so much to him.
The Young Magicians Club gives young people a place to learn magic, perform, meet others who share their interests and develop their own approach to magic. I would have loved something like it when I was starting out.
Why I Do Magic
For my article, I wanted to explore a question that sounds simple but is surprisingly difficult to answer: why do some people become completely absorbed by magic while most people enjoy watching but never pursue?
I called the piece Why I Do Magic and wrote about six things that have kept me interested in performing over the years: the opportunity to talk about ideas I care about, the way performing magic helped an introverted younger me become more confident, the cleverness and constant learning involved, my slightly obsessive love of organisation, the fact that I am lucky enough to work as a professional close-up magician, and most importantly the wonderful friendships I have made through magic.
Some of the reasons are earnest and some are a little less so. My ginger cat even makes an appearance, which he would regard as the most important part of the article.
